Public Library Furniture

Trilogie partnered with Tonganoxie Public Library to create a workspace that balances community welcome, staff functionality, and long-term durability.

The Library Goals

The Tonganoxie Public Library was building something the community had never had before — a modern, purpose-built space designed from the ground up to serve residents of all ages. The old library was dark, dated, and constrained. This project was a full reset: a brand-new building with dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults, community meeting rooms, and the kind of welcoming environment that makes people want to stay. The goal was to bring that vision to life with furniture and design solutions that felt intentional, durable, and genuinely connected to the community, without blowing a public institution's carefully managed budget.

The Design Challenges

Public library projects come with a unique set of constraints. The furniture needs to work hard, withstanding high traffic and daily use across a wide range of age groups, while still feeling warm, approachable, and inviting rather than institutional. That balance is harder to strike than it sounds.

Budget was the other defining challenge. As a publicly funded community resource, every dollar spent on this project needed to go as far as possible. Trilogie leveraged Omnia and TIPS cooperative purchasing contracts to access contract pricing on a broad range of products giving the library access to quality commercial furniture at a price point that made the full vision achievable.

Office Furniture + Workspace Solutions

Trilogie provided a comprehensive furniture solution across the full new building, covering every area of the library from public-facing community spaces to dedicated programming zones. Each area was planned with the specific needs of its users in mind, durability, flexibility, comfort, and a sense of place.

Library Shelving

Standard library stack shelving provides organized, accessible storage throughout the collection areas — clean, functional, and designed to keep the focus on the books and materials the community comes for.

Children's Furniture

The children's area needed to be fun, durable, and magnetic — the kind of space that makes kids genuinely excited to be at the library. Trilogie brought in SixInch animal-shaped rockers that give the space a playful, imaginative character kids love. Paired with appropriately scaled seating and sturdy, easy-to-clean surfaces, the children's area is built to handle the energy of its youngest visitors while staying visually delightful for years to come.

Teen Area

The teen area strikes a different tone: relaxed, social, and a little more grown-up than the children's zone. Comfortable lounge seating gives teens a space that feels like theirs, designed for hanging out, doing homework, or diving into a good read without feeling like they're still in the kids' section.

Community Meeting Rooms

The community meeting rooms were designed for maximum flexibility. Flip-and-nest seating and multi-purpose tables make it easy to reconfigure the space for everything from small group gatherings to larger community events. The furniture stores compactly when not in use and sets up quickly — giving library staff a room that adapts to whatever the community needs it for.

The Final Result

The finished library is everything the old space wasn't: bright, modern, and genuinely built for the community it serves. Every area has a distinct personality and a clear purpose, from the playful energy of the children's section to the flexible functionality of the community meeting rooms. And thanks to cooperative purchasing contracts, the library got there without sacrificing quality or scope. Tonganoxie Public Library is now a space the community can be proud of and one that will serve its residents well for years to come.
